Supervisor Bilal Mahmood has drafted legislation to make it easier for supermarkets and pharmacies to move into existing storefronts by dropping some conditional use permit requirements. The bill would let chain supermarkets use up to 49% of their floor area for attached food service under a single permit and would add supermarkets and pharmacies to the Planning Department's priority review program. Mahmood's office says permits now take six to nine months, and the Chronicle reports recent supermarket and pharmacy closures left residents with fewer places to buy food and medicine.
