About SF Daily Brief

SF Daily Brief is one page a day of what was reported about San Francisco, grouped by subject. We do not report. Every story is a summary of what an outlet published, and every story links to that outlet.

The brief and its podcast are published in English, Spanish and Traditional Chinese.

How the brief is made

  1. CollectEach morning the pipeline reads the public feeds of local outlets and pulls what they published the previous day.
  2. GroupStories are clustered by subject, so one board vote or one Muni change is listed once, under the outlet that reported it.
  3. DraftA model writes a two-sentence summary of each story from the reporting. It adds no fact the outlet did not print.
  4. CorrectCorrections are stamped on the story with their time. A retracted story keeps its slot, headline struck through, with the reason in place of the summary.

Privacy

Ask, the question tool at /ask, uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a question comes from a person, not a bot. Turnstile's processing is covered by Cloudflare's Turnstile Privacy Addendum.

Ask keeps your question, the language of the page, when you asked, whether it was answered, and the answer it gave. It does not store IP addresses, session identifiers or browser details. To enforce question limits, it counts questions per visitor using a one-way hash of the IP address. The hash cannot be turned back into the address. Those counts are deleted after two days. To write an answer, Ask sends your question to an AI model.

We use Vercel Analytics and Google Analytics to count visits. Google Analytics sets cookies.

When you click a story, we log which story it was, its position on the page and your language. We do not log who you are.

If you sign up for the newsletter, we store your email address and language so we can send it. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
