San Francisco officials urge Newsom to sign AB 1294 housing tax break
Assemblymember Matt Haney joined Mayor Daniel Lurie, state Senators Jesse Arreguin and Scott Wiener, and City Attorney David Chiu at a press conference urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign AB 1294. The bill would give nonprofit-owned rental housing partial property tax exemptions in pilot programs in San Francisco, Alameda and Sacramento counties, for households earning up to 120% of area median income. Supporters say lower operating costs would make more below-market housing financially feasible.
San Francisco high-rise owners face steep bills for fire sprinkler retrofit
A San Francisco rule requiring older high-rise apartment buildings to install fire sprinklers is drawing renewed objections, with about 126 buildings and 9,000 homes potentially affected. Some condominium owners worry the special assessments could reach tens of thousands of dollars per unit, or more than $200,000.
Muni service cuts could drag down San Francisco home prices
The San Francisco controller's office estimates that deep Muni service cuts could lower average home prices in the city by 0.6% to 0.9%, or as much as about $14,100, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. SFMTA faces a $307 million annual budget gap and is considering canceling 19 bus lines and one streetcar line, suspending cable car service and cutting frequency on its busiest routes if voters reject Proposition H in November. The same analysis estimates the tax would cost the owner of a single-family home or condominium $129 a year.

Amy Hillyard, 53, co-owner of Farley's Coffee in Potrero Hill, has been missing since March 25, when she left her Oakland home and did not return. Her husband Chris said they had breakfast together that morning before she left for a therapy appointment, and that he found the back door open at 3:15 p.m. with her phone, keys, wallet and handbag on the kitchen counter. Oakland police later found surveillance video of her at 4:30 p.m. near Dimond Park, about two miles from home, and family, friends and law enforcement have searched Dimond Canyon trails and other places she frequented.
